There has been a lot of buzz about cold laser treatment, which goes by a few names: photobiomodulation and  low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

It is a non-invasive, drug-free, and very effective option to standard pain relief methods that is widely used to ease musculoskeletal pain.

This detailed review examines the advantages, effectiveness, and usefulness of cold laser treatment in alleviating neck, back, and disc pain.

Positive Effects and Efficiency of Cold Laser Therapy

The therapeutic benefits of cold laser therapy arise from its capability to penetrate tissues and stimulate cellular functions.

This process, known as photobiomodulation, involves the absorption of light energy by cellular photoreceptors, which triggers various biochemical changes (De Oliveira et al., 2021). These changes lead to an increased production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the cell, enhancing mitochondrial function and promoting cell proliferation and tissue regeneration.

1. Reduction of Inflammation and Pain

One of the primary advantages of cold laser therapy is its ability to reduce inflammation. The therapy works by inhibiting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) (De Oliveira et al., 2021). By decreasing the levels of these inflammatory mediators, cold laser therapy effectively reduces swelling and alleviates pain in the treated area.

2. Effectiveness in Treating Back Pain

Back pain is a prevalent condition that affects individuals globally. Cold laser therapy has shown significant promise in managing both chronic and acute back pain. Research demonstrates that this therapy can substantially diminish pain intensity, enhance mobility, and improve the overall quality of life for those suffering from non-specific low back pain (Madakadze C, 2023).

3. Disc Pain Management

Managing pain associated with intervertebral disc issues, such as herniated discs, can be particularly challenging. However, studies have indicated that cold laser therapy can be an effective treatment for disc-related pain. This therapy promotes cellular repair and reduces inflammation, providing much-needed symptomatic relief and aiding in the healing process (Farivar S, et al., 2014).

4. Efficacy in Alleviating Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common condition that often arises from factors such as poor posture, muscle strain, or degenerative issues like cervical spondylosis. Cold laser therapy has emerged as an effective treatment option for alleviating neck pain. The therapy works by targeting the affected tissues with low-level light energy, which penetrates the skin and stimulates cellular activity.

Research, including a study by Chow et al. (2009), has shown that cold laser therapy can significantly reduce neck pain. This reduction in pain is attributed to the anti-inflammatory effects of the therapy, which involves the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. As a result, there is less inflammation and pain in the affected area.

Additionally, cold laser therapy has been found to improve neck mobility. The therapy aids in relaxing tight muscles and reducing muscle spasms, which are common contributors to neck stiffness and limited range of motion. By promoting better blood circulation and enhancing cellular repair mechanisms, the therapy facilitates a quicker recovery.

Advantages of Cold Laser Therapy in Chiropractic Practice

Non-Invasive Treatment: Cold laser therapy does not require surgical intervention, making it a safe option for those who prefer non-invasive methods.

Pain Relief and Functional Improvement: The therapy effectively reduces pain and enhances neck mobility, resulting in overall functional improvement.

Minimal Risks: Unlike pharmaceutical interventions, cold laser therapy does not involve the side effects commonly associated with medications.

No Surgical Complications: Patients can avoid the risks and complications that may arise from surgical procedures.

Safe and Effective: Cold laser therapy is considered a reliable treatment option for individuals looking for an effective solution to manage their neck pain without significant risks.

Conclusion

Cold laser therapy is an effective, efficient, and non-invasive treatment option for back, disc, and neck pain. With its profound biological effects on reducing inflammation and pain, promoting cellular repair, and improving tissue function, it serves as a valuable tool in pain management.

By integrating this therapy into clinical practice, chiropractors can offer patients a safe and effective alternative to traditional pain relief methods.
