What Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD)

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) is a proven, non-invasive therapy that gently relieves pressure on spinal discs and nerves, reducing pain and restoring function.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD)

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression (NSSD) is a specialized procedure performed using a computer guided table that gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on specific spinal discs. This process helps to rehydrate the disc, allowing the damaged discs to heal and gradually restoring normal disc function.

This in turn can alleviate pressure from the previously swollen and inflamed disc against any pinched spinal nerves, providing relief from chronic back and neck pain.

By applying a gentle cycle of stretching and then a controlled release, the treatment creates a vacuum effect within the disc, encouraging bulging or herniated material to retract and reposition. This allows the disc to heal naturally while promoting rehydration and improved function.

Unlike surgical options such as microdiscectomy, which removes disc material, or laminectomy, which removes part of the vertebral bone, NSSD is non-invasive and focuses on restoring the spine's natural balance.

Though relatively new in Australia, this advanced treatment approach has been successfully used for years in the USA, UK, and Europe to address conditions like sciatica, bulging or herniated discs, and chronic neck and back pain.

If you’re seeking a non-invasive solution to your pain and you’re looking for relief from chronic lower back pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated discs, non surgical spinal decompression treatments could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Compressed Bulging Disc Pressing On The Nerve

This illustration shows the effect of a compressed bulging disc pressing down onto a spinal nerve.

The increased axial load and spinal compression adds pressure on the surrounding joints and spinal nerves and causes a loss of movement at the segment accelerating spinal degeneration of both the disc and the vertebrae themselves.

The reduced circulation means that less oxygen and less essential nutrients are delivered to the discs and nerves.

Without these, the area become inflamed, the muscles stiffen, mobility decreases resulting in even less circulation more tissue damage.  This results in spinal pain, often extending across the back and down the leg as well as decreased mobility, and a decrease the ability to engage in daily activities with ease or comfort.

Healthy, Hydrated And Stable Disc Supporting The Spine

This illustration shows a normal, healthy, hydrated disc supporting the spine with no compression of the disc onto the spinal nerve.

By reversing the load onto the disc through spinal decompression we can effectively relieve the pressure on the affected disc) and surrounding nerves.  This reduction in pressure enhances circulation to the area, delivering oxygen and essential nutrients that support the healing process. Improved blood flow helps to reduce inflammation, accelerate tissue repair, and restore the disc’s health.

As a result, patients often experience significant pain relief, improved mobility, and a renewed ability to engage in daily activities with greater ease and comfort.

So How Does NSSD Work?
11-How The Hills DT Works

Non-surgical spinal decompression (NSSD) is a gentle therapy to relieve back pain and improve spine health without surgery. The treatment is generally very comfortable. Many patients fall asleep while on the table. Here’s how it works

Relieves Pressure

You lie comfortably on a special table with your legs raised for a 20-30 minute session while the computer controlled program applies the exact force needed to stretch your spine. This gentle stretch creates space between the vertebrae, reducing pressure on the discs and on pinched nerves.

Helps Discs Heal

The gentle stretching encourages bulging or herniated discs to move back into place and improves blood flow. The negative pressure created in the discs stimulates the flow of nutrients back into the disc, providing hydration and helping them heal.

Safe and Comfortable:

This hi-tech table stands at the forefront of non-surgical spinal decompression technology. The Hill DT, renowned for its precision and effectiveness, is designed to gently stretch the spine, reducing pressure on the discs through its sophisticated computer-controlled system. This allows for specific segments of the spine and specific discs to be gently and precisely targeted. This makes the process more comfortable for the patient while ensuring that the decompression is delivered with exceptional accuracy.

Is NSSD A Painful Process?

Typically, not. Non-surgical spinal decompression is designed to be gentle and comfortable for most patients. Some may experience mild temporary soreness after the initial sessions, similar to the feeling after trying a new workout. This is simply a sign that the muscles are being used in a different way and are adjusting to the treatment. However, as the sessions continue and the spine begins to decompress, the muscles typically relax, and any soreness usually subsides quickly. Most patients find the process soothing and even look forward to the deep sense of relief it provides.
